Charlottetown is a gorgeous, fun loving, down home capital, set on PEI, Canada's
Garden of the Gulf. Over thirty cruise ships visit the friendly port of
Charlottetown annually, bringing close to thirty thousand passengers plus crew
to the Island.
Charlottetown has two major shopping centres: the downtown Confederation Court
Mall and the Charlottetown Mall on University Avenue, as well as numerous other
retail stores and malls. Many of the cultural locations and events in
Charlottetown focus on the City's historical role. The Confederation Centre is
the largest cultural complex in the City, consisting of a theatre and art

The City of Charlottetown was first incorporated in 1855. The present city was
incorporated in 1995 following the amalgamation with Hillsborough Park, East
Royalty, West Royalty, Winsloe, Sherwood, and Parkdale.
Prince Edward Island (its name since 1799) was formerly called Abegweit,
meaning ?cradle on the waves?, by the Mi'kmaq Indians, Ile St. Jean
by the French, and Island of St. John by the English. 1765 saw Charlotte
Town being designated the capital city of the province. In 1768 Charles Morris
began laying out the streets of Charlotte Town. Thomas Wright, a surveyor,
expanding upon Mr. Morris?s plan, created a layout of the town with 500 lots
(84? x 120? each), streets 100? wide stretching from the water and streets
80? wide crossing at right angles, a central square for public buildings and
four large green ?squares?. Numerous changes have occurred over the years,
but the basic 500 lots can still be defined and the 4 green squares are still in
existence.
