Edmonton is a lively metropolitan center with a population of about 800,000.
Despite its rapid growth over recent decades, it has remained a scenic and
prosperous capital. The city has never allowed uncontrolled development, a
temptation that some other oil boomtowns could not resist, so the city has
retained an orderly, efficient layout and much of its original rugged beauty.
Now known as ?Canada?s Festival City,? Edmonton has developed a marvelous
park system, superlative sporting resources and a cultural ambience that
attracts major annual events.
The beauty of Edmonton is enhanced by the deep, wide North Saskatchewan River
Valley, a seventeen mile greenbelt of parks and recreational facilities that
meanders through the city centre. Edmonton's downtown overlooks the steep, North
bank of this picturesque river. The Old Strathcona historic district and the
University of Alberta overlook the South bank.
Alberta's capital is also home to West Edmonton Mall, the world's largest
shopping and entertainment complex offering in excess of eight hundred stores
and services. Located in the city's West end, every freeway seems to lead
directly to this temple of shopping. The Mall has - of course - the world's
largest parking lot. Less predictably, it houses an indoor wave pool and
waterslide, an indoor roller coaster and much more. The megaplex also boats a
hotel and an area featuring its own nightlife district (Bourbon Street) complete
with casino. MORE

Other major Edmonton attractions are the Muttart Conservatory - noted for its
unique "pyramid village" design - and the Alberta Legislature
Building. Also worth a visit is Fort Edmonton Park, billed as Canada's largest
living history museum. The city also hosts a blossoming arts community.
Summer activities include golf, cycling, swimming and spectator sports. Edmonton
boats three professional sports teams: the NHL Oilers play hockey from September
to April, the Trappers offer AAA baseball in the summer months and the CFL
Eskimos play football from June to November. The predictable but typically light
snow cover in winter offers opportunities for cross-country skiing, ice skating
and snowshoeing.
Like many Canadian cities, Edmonton offers an extensive system of underground
and overhead ?pedways? in the downtown area that connect major office and
shopping complexes. You can travel from one end of downtown to the other without
setting foot outside (though Edmonton's dry climate that results from being in
the nearby Rockies "rain shadow" is quite tolerable even in December
and January).
