popular way to get close to the falls. Access is through the Observation Tower
where rain gear is provided as part of the experience. The tours run from
mid-May through October.
The Whirlpool Jet Boat offers the adventurous traveler a way to rapidly
tour the Niagara River or take the Cave of the Winds trip for an
opportunity to stroll through the spray at the base of the Falls. There's also a
helicopter tour over the Falls. Other attractions include the Aquarium of
Niagara, Niagara's Wax Museum of History and the recently opened Seneca Niagara
Casino in downtown Niagara Falls.
Minutes from the Falls is the quaint countryside of Niagara County New York with
its captivating small cities, towns, and villages, apple orchards and farms.
Shop in picturesque craft and antique stores surrounded by cobblestone homes,
scenic parks, markets and wineries.
The Erie Canal System offers an absorbing glimpse into the past. The extensive
system was excavated by hand in the early 1800's, well before the days of modern
machinery. It was, and is, an impressive achievement of engineering. The
363-mile long canal system connected the Hudson River with Lake Erie to provide
a major shipping route and its system of locks raised and lowered the water at
many points along the route from Albany to Buffalo to accommodate mule pulled
barges laden with passengers and commodities.
Niagara is also popular as a year-round, world-class sport fishing destination
and offers many camping and boating sites. Unlike some more commercial areas,
there is a friendly, hometown to the entire area.
