Located in one of the most beautiful natural settings in North America,
exuberant, romantic Quebec City is well worth the trip.
A remarkable cultural and geographic crossroads between Europe and the
Americas Quebec has a unique international atmosphere. Famous for its rich
history and heritage - the city and its surrounding area welcomes over six
million tourists every year - Quebec City is also modern and dynamic.
The beautifully preserved Vieux-Quebec (Old Quebec) is small and tightly
packed, the repository of four centuries of history and French tradition.
Seventeenth and eighteenth century buildings have been carefully maintained
and preserved over the centuries and the environs offer attractive parks well
stocked with historic monuments. Place Royale is one of the oldest districts on the continent and the Government
of Quebec has completely restored many of its centuries old buildings. The
meticulous preservation of this, the only fortified city remaining in North
America, has prompted UNESCO to proclaim Vieux-Quebec a World Heritage Site.
The cradle of French civilization in North America, Quebec City is
proudly preparing to celebrate its 400th anniversary in 2008. MORE

Perched on a cliff above a narrow point in the St. Lawrence River, Quebec
City's view seems to encompass the entire world. In the seventeenth century the
first French explorers came here to establish the colony of New France and, in
some ways, Quebec City still resembles a French provincial town. While the
culture, music, food, and art are influenced by the original emigres
from France, Les Quebecois have created a modern, vibrant culture with
its own unique traditions, flavours, sounds, and sights.
Lower Town, home to the first settlers of New France, is centered on
the old port district. Leading the way to Upper Town are steep, winding roads
and stairways with names, like Escalier Casse-Cou (Breakneck Stairway) and Cote
de la Montagne (Mountain Road). Crowning it all is one the most photographed
buildings in the world, the famous Chateau Frontenac, regal and alone atop
towering Cape Diamond.
In Upper Town, the contours of the fortified city are easy to see and
explore. Both parts of the town offer attractions ranging from from historic
buildings to beautiful churches. However, don't be fooled into think the city is
a monument to history; it has an astounding array of cabarets, cafes, and
restaurants to enjoy the unique Quebecois cuisine.
Quebec City is the closest one can come to being in France without leaving the
continent.
