The two official languages of Canada are
English and French, but English is the dominant language in British Columbia.
However, throughout British Columbia's history, many Asians have migrated to
Vancouver, originally from mainland China in the 1800's and early 1900's, more
recently from Hong Kong and other Pacific Rim countries. More than 30 percent of
Vancouver's households speak Cantonese or Mandarin. Vancouver is a city of diversity offering an endless supply of
things to see and do no matter what time of the year. Stay inside the city or to
travel out along the coast and mountains; you'll find a huge range of activities
either way.
Downtown Vancouver has an exhilarating selection of shopping
including high-end retails stores, chic and extraordinary shops and
superb restaurants along side Canada's largest city park. Stanley Park offers
hundreds of acres of lush forest and crystal clear lakes; a wonderful backdrop
for entertainment and relaxation. The Lions Gate Bridge offers a panoramic view
of Burrard Inlet and the North Shore Mountains and inside the park are a
miniature railway, Water Park, beaches, pool, children's farmyard and the
Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre.
Chinatown is close to downtown Vancouver, offering block after
block of radiantly colored markets, restaurants and shoping. The most
discriminating traveller will be amazed at the array of exotic foods, clothing,
art and entertainment. While there, check out the world's thinnest office
building - the Sam Kee Building - on the corner of Pender and Carrall streets.
Erected in 1913 and currently occupied, the building is less than two metres
wide!
The picturesque and oldest neighborhood of Vancouver, Gastown,
was named after a garrulous Yorkshire-born saloon proprietor, John Deighton,
nicknamed Gassy Jack. According to legend, Gassy Jack told the local mill
workers they could drink all the whisky they wanted as long as they helped him
build his saloon; the saloon was built within 24 hours. Gastown's cobblestone
streets and 1800's architecture creates a historical and interesting background
for the distinctive shops and galleries.
